How to celebrate Halloween during Covid and stay safe!
Halloween is a fun tradition that brings joy to children and adults alike, but it’s likely going to be a bit different this year. Since it seems like Covid-19 and social distancing measures will stay with us for a while, many parents wonder whether celebrating Halloween can be done safely. If you’ve been worried about Halloween, we’ve got you covered. Here are a few ideas on how to celebrate Halloween during Covid and stay safe!
Keep in mind that we don’t know what the Covid-19 restrictions in Toronto and GTA will be during Halloween. These are just a few ideas and you can adjust them based on whatever the current restrictions are in your area.
2020 has proven that with some creativity, and community spirit we can celebrate Halloween and still stay safe!
First, as always you should decorate your home! There’s nothing to stop you from getting in the Halloween spirit and decorations will never be something that will be restricted. After you’ve decorated your home and created good Halloween vibes, let’s go over a few ideas to safely go trick-or-treating.
How to celebrate Halloween during Covid and stay safe!
Outdoor trick or treating
Celebrating Halloween during Covid might require some teamwork from your neighbours, but with the right spirit, it can be done!
1. Create family Halloween packages to deliver!
While this requires some logistics, it can be done with a handful of volunteers. In order to ease some of the work, we suggest having a few teams, but you can decide what works best for you. We suggest 4 teams to make this run smoothly: a collection team, a packing team, an information team, and a delivery team.
First, you need to create a list of all the families interested in receiving packages and the number of children in each household. The information team will be in charge of gathering this information and spreading the word about what you’re trying to do.
Then, everyone who is interested in participating can donate candies in one or more predefined spots which will be picked up by the collection team. Once the donations are done, it’s the packing team’s time to shine. They will pack the candy into equal portions for each child on the list created by the information team. Finally, the delivery team will deliver the packages on Halloween Eve to every family that participated.
It will be a joy to see the kids’ faces when they receive their packages. This is also an excellent opportunity to meet your neighbours and help to unite your community!
2. Leave candy arranged outdoor for kids to pick themselves
Another fun way to give out candy is to leave bags of candy in front of the house. The candy can be left on a table. If you want to be creative with it, string a clothesline across your front lawn and clip the candy bags to it.
If you’re handing out candy to trick-or-treaters, make sure that:
• There’s a table with pre-arranged candy so children can grab what they need without reaching into a bowl. If possible, put the table closer to the road and not at your doorway.
• Don’t give out any candy that isn’t packaged.
• Don’t give out candy if you’re not feeling well. Stay inside!
3. Make a trick or treating plan!
One more idea for trick or treating this year is to make a list of houses that you will visit. You can work together with friends and neighbours and make a list of people who would like to participate in trick or treating. Then, you visit everyone who agreed to participate.
The kids can get a more traditional trick or treating experience. Or you can gather all the candy together on an outdoor table and let them pick their treats.
You can also do this in a building and visit only the units who have agreed to a visit. Last year we joined together 5 families in my condo building, and the 5 kids moved with one parent between all the units to collect their treats.
Indoor Trick or Treat
Halloween can be celebrated indoors as well, as long as you follow indoor gathering restrictions. Make sure you check the current Covid-19 guidelines since the rules keep changing.
1. Go trick or treating between rooms at home
This is a great Halloween activity for a family or a small group of people who would like to celebrate together indoors.
Close all the doors inside your home and in each room, a family member wearing a costume can hand out candies.
If the adults use special effects and costumes, this experience can be taken to the next level of creativity.
2. Host a candy hunt
Another fun activity for collecting candy would be to set up a candy hunt. You can structure it similarly to an Easter egg hunt where the candies are hidden or have the children search for candy while accomplishing assignments or solving riddles. You are only limited by your creativity here.
The one thing I recommend is keeping a list for yourself where you’ve hidden the candy. You don’t want to be finding old chocolate in December!
3. Have a special Halloween dinner
Make a fun night of it with a themed dinner. Make your family’s favourite food for the entree and then serve some spooky dessert! There are all sorts of food recipes for Halloween that you can prepare and enjoy as a family meal. Here are some spooky treat ideas that we love:
