Fertility Process in Ontario

Are you struggling with infertility? If so, you’re not alone. Infertility affects one in eight couples and can be a very stressful experience. Infertility is defined as not being able to get pregnant (conceive) after one year (or longer) of unprotected sex. As well as an inability to carry a pregnancy to term (staying pregnant). The good news is there are plenty of resources available for people who want to get help with their fertility. In this blog post, we will cover the Fertility Process and funding in Ontario.

There are 3 main types of fertility treatment:

Medicines.
Surgical procedures.
Assisted conception – including intrauterine insemination (IUI) and in vitro fertilization (IVF).

Eligibility

To be eligible for government-funded fertility treatments, you must live in Ontario and have a valid Ontario health card. Sex, gender, sexual orientation or family status are not considerations in fertility treatment eligibility.
In Ontario, there’s a program that provides funding to participating fertility clinics across the province to cover treatment costs for eligible residents. For more information click here.

Depending on the type of treatment you choose, there may be additional requirements for coverage, as well as some limits on coverage

Because fertility in women is known to decline steadily with age, some providers evaluate and treat women aged 35 years or older after 6 months of unprotected sex.

About the Fertility Process in Ontario

Whether you choose funding or a privet fertility clinic, the process steps are similar.

Referral
Your treatment journey begins with a referral from your healthcare provider. Once your referral is received the fertility specialist’s office will contact you to arrange your initial consultation.
Contact your healthcare provider as soon as you can, as there is a long waiting list for fertility specialists in Ontario.
Consultation
Your medical history will review with you, including any previous fertility treatments. This is the place to ask questions and begin building a treatment path with your specialist. If you are undergoing treatment with a partner(s), they may be asked to attend your first appointment.
Testing
Your specialist will order tests for greater insight into your health and fertility.
Follow Up Appointment and Treatment
You will meet your specialist again to review your test results and determine the next steps. The treatment timeline varies between patients.
